Las formaciones rocosas son principalmente columnas de piedra de entre 5-7 m de alto y entre 0.3-3 m de grueso. Hay diferentes teorías sobre el origen de las columnas, que pueden dividirse en dos vertientes: las que sugieren un origen orgánico (actividad de coral) o abiótico (meteorización prismática y desertificación de las rocas, formación de arena y concreciones de arena y caliza, o arrecifes en forma de burbuja del Ypresiense).
